To become licenced in Alberta, you must fulfill the following requirements.
Step 1: Confirm with the AFSRB that the requirements for a funeral services business can be met by the applicant
Depending on the business model there may be additional requirements to accomodate how the business will operate.
Funeral Services Business requirements
The business must have a fixed business location
The business must have access to facilities required to fulfill funeral services contracts
Preperation room for embalming, offices for making arrangements, facility for family to view/identify the decedent, crematory, transfer services
If the business does not have these facilities on site, an agreement with a licensed funeral services business must be entered into which provides access to the required services
All funeral businesses must employ at least one licensed funeral director
All funeral businesses must appoint one person to act as the business manager for the location, the business manager must be a licensed funeral director
Documentation required for all funeral services business
Certificate of Incorporation from Alberta Corporate Registry
Municipal building and zoning approvals
Municipal business licence (if the municipality does not require a business licence, a letter from the municipality stating that they do not require business licence must be provided)
Copy of the standard at-need contract used at this location
A list of all directors, shareholders and principals of the legal corporation
Criminal record checks must be provided for each person listed
Copy of the business policy for Labelling and Identification
Pre-need business licence requirements
Copy of the standard pre-need contract to be used at this location
Copy of the contract/agreement between the funeral services business and the trust company and/or insurance company that will hold the pre-need funds
Step 2: Complete the application for a new funeral services business
Once the intial application and all required documentation has been recieved, the business manager will be provided access to the business portal
The business manager will complete the branch information throught the portal
Step 3: Apply for individual licence/s
There may be additional information required from the individuals based on their current licence status.
The individual licensee will need to update the funeral services business that they are employed by through the employee protal
This individual application will be submitted to the business manager for approval to be submitted to the AFSRB
Fees
Licences will not be issued until payment has been received.
