Crematory Application

Application Requirements

To become a licenced crematory in Alberta, you must fulfill the following requirements.

   Step 1: Ensure you are eligible to become a licensed crematory in Alberta.
Contact the AFSRB to confirm your eligibility as a crematory

• All crematories must be owned/operated by a licensed funeral services business. 
  • Only funeral services businesses are eligible to enter into contracts with the public.
  • The crematory licence (on its own) would not allow the crematory to deal directly with the public.

   Step 2: Complete the application for a crematory licence
The following documentation must be included with the application before it can be processed.

• Municipal Building & Zoning Approvals
• Municipal Business Licence
• Cremation Authorization Contract
• Authorization for the Disposition of Cremated Remains
• Code of Practice for the Disposition of Cremated Remains

   Step 3: Confirmation of crematory unit installation and operation
The AFSRB needs confirmation that the crematory unit is operational prior to issuing a licence.

• The manufacturer or the third party installer must provide confirmation that the crematory is installed and is ready to operate.
• This confirmation is to be in writing (by email is fine).

   Step 4: Inspection by AFSRB
The inspection must be completed prior to the licence being issued.

• Contact the AFSRB office to set up a time to complete the inspection.
• Please schedule this far enough in advance to avoid delays in processing the licence application

Fees

Licences will not be issued until payment has been received.

Application Approval Process

Once you have submitted the application, a review of all the documentation will be completed and any deficiencies found, must be dealt with. You will receive an email when the licence has been approved.
